"To start, I learned about writing systems that I had never heard of before. That part was extremely fascinating. I am someone who has been exposed mostly to English language texts or (because I study French) texts that use the Latin alphabet. Seeing how certain scripts developed out of other languages and/or how they evolved to fit with non-English languages gave me a new perspective. My personal favorite was cuneiform. It was so very different from anything I’d ever learned about. Because it was so different, learning about cuneiform was also the first time I was forced to think about the function of writing in a different way. […] I also really liked learning about Japanese script. There’s so much history behind it (although that is true of all of these scripts). Their simultaneous use of three scripts - one logographic and two syllabaries - is really interesting. I’d love to do more reading on it in the future to develop a deeper understanding of how it works." ~ Cathryn, Spring 2021
