Reflection from Brittany Lehn, Spring 2021

"When looking at this class and my major, which is linguistics, I feel they are related but very different. Within linguistics, at least the classes I have taken, we look at the sounds of the language and find patterns and make rules to account for changes. We also look the structure of the language and how it is organized. In looking at the structure, we are typically given the language in the Latin alphabet and not in the native script, although very rarely the native script will be written above the Latin translation. Below the Latin alphabet translation, we are given a gloss that we use to analyze the language. So, as I mentioned we rarely see the original script of the language that we are analyzing and in our class discussions we talked about how the script can have a big influence on culture and the society of the people who speak it. It was really nice to see and study some of these scripts to better understand more about them."
